He is head of the Gastrointestinal Oncology unit at the Valencian Oncology Institute Foundation. His academic interest is centred on gastrointestinal cancers and he is particularly interested in developing innovative strategies to treat colorectal and pancreatic cancer.
He studied at the Complutense University of Madrid and Valencia and has specialised in Medical Oncology since 1984 after completing his academic training at the MD Anderson hospital (Houston) and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (New York).
He actively participates in designing clinical trials for new drugs and designing new colon and rectal cancer treatments and coordinates several multi-centre studies on gastrointestinal tumours.
He is a founding member of the Multidisciplinary Spanish Group on Digestive Cancer (GEMCAD) and is currently the Chair. He coordinates designing and coordinating Spanish and international clinical trials in these areas. Furthermore, he has belonged to the American Cancer Institute's (NCI) Rectal and Anal Cancer work group since 2014. He belongs to the Spanish Society of Medical Oncology (SEOM), the European Society of Medical Oncology (ESMO) and the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO).
