He managed the Gastrointestinal Oncology Unit of the Valencian Institute of Oncology (IVO, Instituto Valenciano de Oncología) foundation and currently works exclusively at Initia, where he is co-director and manager of the Gastrointestinal Tumours Unit. His academic interest is focused on gastrointestinal cancers, with an emphasis on the development of innovative treatments for colorectal and pancreatic cancer.
He studied at the Universidad Complutense of Madrid and the University of Valencia, and is a certified specialist in Medical Oncology since 1984, having completed his academic training at the MD Anderson Hospital (Houston) and the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre (New York).
He actively participates in the design of clinical trials with both new drugs and new forms of treatment for colon and rectal cancer, and coordinates several multicentre studies concerning gastrointestinal tumours.
He is a founding member and the current chairman of the Multidisciplinary Spanish Group on Digestive Cancer (GEMCAD, Grupo Español Multidisciplinar en Cáncer Digestivo). He supervises the design and coordination of national and international clinical trials in the abovementioned fields of research. In addition, he has been a member of the National Cancer Institute's (NCI) Rectal and Anal Cancer Working Group since 2014, and is currently a member of the Spanish Society of Oncology (SEOM, Sociedad Española de Oncología), the European Society of Medical Oncology (ESMO), and the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO).
